I once went out for drinks with a buddy of mine, Steve. We had a good time, ordered a few rounds, and when the check came, I said, I got this. Steve shook his head. No, no, let me get it. We argued for a minute. Then he did something strange. He pulled out his wallet, took out a bill, and slid it across the table. Here, he said. Take it, but promise me you’ll do the same for someone else someday.
I laughed, thinking he was joking. But he wasn’t.
I’ve never forgotten that moment. It wasn’t about the money it was about the gesture.
